Waves of Generosity

Favoring rash guards over black ties, UCSD’s Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center has paired up with local surfing greats for a good cause. Every summer, the center hosts the Luau and Longboard Invitational, when corporate-sponsored world-class surfers compete to raise money for cancer research. In the past, surfers such as Skip Frye (husband of San Diego mayoral candidate Donna Frye), L.J. Richards, Donald Takayama, Rusty Preisendorfer, ’78, and Sam George have competed as members of the four-man teams. The competition judges the surfer’s maneuvering, control and creativity on the wave.

There’s also an auction and raffle drawings at La Jolla Shores, culminating in a celebration, complete with tropical cuisine, hula dancers and live Polynesian music. Since 1994, the annual event has raised over a million dollars for cancer
research and education. Last year’s competition raised $308,000 and planners expect to eclipse that this year. The 12th Annual Invitational will be held near Scripps Pier from August 20 to 27.

So Aloha! Catch that wave of generosity and a few rays into the bargain.
