Bye-Bye Camp Matthews

Recognize any of these? Like cats with nine lives, Camp Matthews’ old barracks have undergone many transformations, from bookstore and registrar’s office to Fifth/ERC central. And to mangle that old Elvis line, the buildings, where young Marines once conducted small weapons training, have left the campus! In their place, the University is constructing a $35 million Student Academic Services Facility, scheduled for opening in April 2007. The 102,000 square foot, five-story L-shaped structure was designed by San Diego architect Rob Quigley so that its courtyard will serve as an outdoor lobby leading onto Matthews Quad. It will provide one-stop shopping for such services as financial aid, registration, admissions, campus tours and other student programs formerly scattered all across campus. The building will also include a 300-seat multipurpose room and two restaurants. Retail shops are planned for the ground floor, both as a convenience to students and to bring some commercial buzz to the area.

All well and good, but for the 40 years of Tritons saying goodbye to the barracks, may we call it a moving experience?
