Fledgling Entrepreneurs

Eureka! You’ve made the discovery of a lifetime. But how do you get it out of your undergraduate lab and onto the market?

Triton Innovation Network (T.I.N.) is a student organization that seeks to build relationships between students and professionals in technology, finance, marketing and management fields. Their goal is to bridge the gap between technologies developed in the lab and their real-world application. This year T.I.N. introduced the UCSD 50K Entrepreneur Competition, emulating MIT’s 50K business plan competition.

Seven teams of five students will compete to win the grand prize of $30,000, and two other prizes of $10,000 each. The students are given resources to help them choose the technological idea they hope to market, plus assistance with their business plan.

The judges are angel investors, venture capitalists and legal/business professionals from San Diego’s technology and entrepreneurial community. In addition to internal UCSD support, current sponsors include The Rady School of Management, Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, IR/PS, UCSD TechTips and the Von Liebig Center.

T.I.N. sponsored nine events during the fall quarter to facilitate team bonding. These included guest-speaker presentations, social dinners and project presentations. Their first event on September 28 drew over 150 students, community leaders and professors. For more information go to: http://www.ucsd50k.com
