Meeting the Challenge: Alumni Rally Their Peers to Support UC San Diego

Looking to inspire fellow alumni and friends to unite in supporting UC San Diego alumnus, Michael Robertson, ’90 and his wife Leslie, found a way by establishing an innovative match program as part of the University’s annual scholarship fundraiser, the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars.

“ I’m concerned about students having both the opportunity to attend college and to do so without taking on a huge debt they must struggle with for years after college,” says Robertson.

In addition to sponsoring the scholarship benefit through the Robertson Education Empowerment Foundation, Michael and Leslie also rally other Chancellor’s Challenge 5K participants by donating $25 for each runner who finishes ahead of them. In total, the Robertsons have given more than $80,000 to support undergraduate students as part of the event. Along the way, the dedicated couple has motivated many to run a bit faster and harder to raise extra funds for UC San Diego student scholarships. For more information on how you can get involved in the annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5K, call (858) 822-1536 or email spaar@ucsd.edu.

While the Robertsons have focused on undergraduate support, Miles Kan, ’89, M.A., ’91, an entrepreneur in computer technology, established a challenge to support the Classical Studies Program in the Division of Arts and Humanities. After generously donating $20,000 to create the Alan Kan Endowment for Classical Studies in honor of his father, Miles is reaching out to other alumni to encourage them to join him in raising an additional $20,000 to help increase private support for the Classical Studies Program.

“ I give back to UCSD because I have always felt a strong connection with the school,” notes Kan. “In today’s environment, a strong liberal arts background is still very important. My studies in ancient Greek and Latin, philosophy and history have given me a different perspective, even in my technology consulting company.”
Kan’s challenge will help fund student outings, public lectures, performances and exhibits in the Classical Studies Program. For more information on this ongoing fundraising
initiative, call (858) 534-9043 or email kmccartney@ucsd.edu.

As a result of the generosity and motivation of Michael and Leslie Robertson, Miles Kan and other passionate alums, more and more students will reap the great benefits of their gifts.
