STUDENT LIFE AND SPORTS ON CAMPUS

Express to Success
The Express to Success (ETS) program was born after a 1999 Student Research and Information survey sent to alumni revealed graduates’ dissatisfaction with their personal and communication skills training at UCSD.

The first year, the program attracted less than 100 participants. Now around 2,000 students use its services each year.

“It’s a no-credit program, so it provides a great, pressure-free environment for students to learn important social and speaking skills,” says Sara Henry, the program’s director.

With a variety of seminars, workshops and training sessions, the program helps students develop good communication, public speaking skills, and the ability to “communicate with confidence.”

SPORTS SHORTS

Making a Splash
The swimming and diving season is in full splash and senior Dan Perdew is one of the highlights in a powerful returning squad. The LaVerne native won the NCAA 50 freestyle as a sophomore and has captured the 100 freestyle the past two years. Fellow senior Todd Langland gives UCSD a potent 1-2 punch in the sprints. Seniors Karla Holman and Cari Cunningham, both NCAA veterans, and juniors Anju Shimura and Jessica Ferguson are among the prominent holdovers on the women’s side.

Defending the Crown
Coach Charity Elliott’s defending CCAA regular season champion Women’s Basketball team, picked by conference coaches to repeat in 2010, opens defense of its crown the first week in January. Elliott has firepower in the form of senior defensive stopper Erin Noonan, senior guard Annette Ilg (left), and 2009 CCAA Freshman of the Year Chelsea Carlisle, the club’s top returning scorer.

New Team, Big Dreams
With seven seniors graduating last June, Men’s Coach Chris Carlson enters the season with by far the youngest, least experienced roster of his tenure. But senior guard Jordan Lawley (right), a lefty out of Lodi, Calif., who led the Tritons in scoring a year ago, and was an All-CCAA selection, is providing leadership.
