Achieving the Extraordinary: Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence

Fifty years ago, UC San Diego founder Roger Revelle had one criterion for the fledgling campus: “It must be distinctive.”

Today, UC San Diego is ranked as one of the nation’s top universities. The campus is an economic engine—in San Diego County alone, the University contributes $5.7 billion annually to the economy.

As we celebrate 50 years of “Achieving the Extraordinary” with activities and events from September 2010 through June 2011, we invite you to join us in commemorating the impressive accomplishments of our stellar students, alumni, faculty and staff over the past half-century. Your support will also help ensure the success of the next 50 years.

There are many ways to celebrate our 50th Anniversary . . . and make a difference for the University and future students:

1. Get Involved
Join us for our 50th signature events:
November 13: Celebrate50
Featuring a dinner and presentation of the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal, this event will raise funds for the Invent the Future student support campaign.
November 18: Founders Day Celebration
An afternoon of food, fun, entertainment and high spirits to celebrate the past, present and future of UC San Diego with a variety of presenters and performers.
February 22–25: Innovation Day Expo and Symposia ( IDEaS)
The San Diego community is invited to “come back to class” for intellectually stimulating lectures featuring renowned innovators and hands-on exhibits.
April 16: Green Open House
Showcasing the campus as a living laboratory of green innovation, activities will include a car and trade show, faculty presentations, kids’ zone, performances and more.

Also, join us for many other activities and events like the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars on October 22. We will be celebrating our milestone anniversary all year!

2. Volunteer50
Answer Chancellor Marye Anne Fox’s call to service and dedicate 50 hours of service to the community. To participate, visit 50th.ucsd.edu/v50.

3. Become an Advocate
Join the thousands who have made themselves heard about the importance of higher education in California. Visit advocacy.ucsd.edu to learn more.

4. Support Scholarships and Fellowships
Help ensure that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to attend UC San Diego. Gifts to the $50 million Invent the Future student support campaign will do just that.
