Cliff Notes May 2007: Volume 4, Number 2

SPORTS SHORTS

Goal in Sight
UC San Diego Women's Soccer team headed to Louisville, KY for the NCAA Division II Championships where the team, coached by Brian McManus, beat undefeated and No. 1-ranked St. Rose (NY) 1-0 in the semi-finals on December 2. The team, ranked No. 12, advanced to the finals, where they faced No. 5 Grand Valley State. Unfortunately, the Tritons lost 4-0, finishing the year with a 19-3-3 overall record.

This year's club is young—Lisa Bradley and Annette Ilg are the only two seniors—but has plenty of experience with every starter back from 2009. Bradley, Ilg, Sarah McTigue, Anne Wethe, Shelby Wong, Hayley Johnson (above, right) and goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong were All-CCAA selections.

Comeback Kids
Ricci Luyties, first-year head coach, saw his Women's Volleyball team overcome a disastrous mid-season, five-game losing streak to finish tied for second in the CCAA regular season standings and earn a berth in the NCAA Pacific Regional. Juniors Roxanne Brunsting and Katie Condon and sophomore Julia Freidenberg garnered All-CCAA recognition.

One More Game!
For UCSD Baseball Coach Dan O'Brien, improvement can mean only one thing in 2011—win one more game. Last season was universally hailed as the "best in school history." O'Brien's outfit, playing a fan-pleasing, old-school style of baseball, racked up a sterling, 54-8 record, won its second consecutive CCAA and NCAA West Regional Championships and advanced to the Division II College World Series for the second straight time.

This season, outfielders Kyle Saul and Aaron Bauman and catcher Kellen Lee (right)—all .400 hitters last spring—and standout Evan Kehoe, who hit .351, will be back to power the offense. On the mound, seniors Tim Shibuya and Guido Knudson, who combined for 23 wins as juniors, and bullpen ace Danny Simmons (5-0, 2.13 ERA) provide top-line experience.
