SPORTS SHORTS

High Honors
Graduating seniors Kelly Fogarty, Sixth '11, of the track & field team, and Vincent Nguyen, Marshall '11, from the tennis team, were selected as UC San Diego's Outstanding Female and Male Senior Student-Athlete for 2010-11. The awards, sponsored by UCSD Alumni and presented in June, recognize seniors who have achieved distinction both outside and inside the classroom. Fogarty, an All-American sprinter from Danville, Calif., and holder of school records in the 100 and 200, majored in human biology. Nguyen, captain of the Tritons' undefeated, 10th-ranked racquet squad, graduated with a degree in biochemistry and cell biology. Both also received prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarships.

Softball on a Roll
Sparked by the softball team's national championship run, UCSD finished fifth in the NCAA Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings for 2010-11, which ranks the nation's top overall athletic programs. Coach Patti Gerckens' softball squad won the CCAA Championship, the NCAA Regional and SuperRegional tourneys and then rolled undefeated through the eight-team NCAA Championship field in Salem, Va., this past May. Other teams scoring points towards the Tritons' Directors' Cup finish were baseball, women's water polo, men's tennis, track & field, fencing, swimming & diving, women's volleyball and women's soccer.

Tritons in U.S. Olympic Trials
Three members of the swimming & diving team—senior Alexandra Henley (200 m. backstroke), junior Emily Adamczyk (200 m. breaststroke) and sophomore Nick Korth (100 breaststroke)—are headed to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials next June in Omaha, Neb. Henley and Korth were both individual event winners at last March's NCAA Division II Championships. The top swimmers at the trials will represent the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

Global Games
This past summer, the women's soccer and men's water polo teams traveled abroad for international competitions. Coach Brian McManus and his Triton women's soccer team, fresh off a runner-up finish in last year's NCAA Division II Championship, traveled to Costa Rica for 11 days, and won three games, including a pair against the Costa Rican national team. In July, Coach Denny Harper and his squad spent two weeks in Croatia, a hotbed of men's water polo and home of former UCSD star Adi Jerkovic. Headquartered in the city of Makarska, the team played five games—up-and-down the Dalmatian Coast, all in salt-water venues—resulting in a 3-1-1 record against high-level club competition.
