Cliff Notes May 2007: Volume 4, Number 2

Tritons Maintain No. 1 Ranking
For the fifth consecutive year, UC San Diego is No. 1 in the National Collegiate Scouting Association's (NCSA) NCAA Division II Power Rankings, which rates colleges on athletic prowess, academic strength and student-athlete graduation rates. Additionally, the NCSA ranked UCSD sixth in the three NCAA divisions.

Men's Basketball Now on Air
For the first time this season, the UC San Diego men's basketball team can be heard live on local San Diego radio. ESPN 1700 AM will broadcast 12 Triton home games and four road contests during the regular season. Craig Elsten, Marshall '96 (right)—host of the popular online weekly radio show, Triton Talk—will do the play-by-play alongside commentary by Jack Cronin.

Honors for Women's Soccer Team
Coach Brian McManus was named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coach of the Year for the fifth time after leading his squad to the CCAA South Division title. UC San Diego's senior goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong, Muir '12, was chosen as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. The Triton Soccer team finished the season ranked 12th nationally.

Coaching Carousel
Two veteran head coaches—swimming and diving's Scott McGihon and baseball's Dan O'Brien, Muir '97 (right)—left UC San Diego following their 2011 seasons. McGihon has spent 13 years at Canyonview Pool and saw his 2011 squads finish second (men) and third (women) at the NCAA Division II Championships in San Antonio, TX. He coached 33 Triton individual national champions and his women's teams never finished lower than fourth nationally. McGihon's two assistants, Corrie Falcon and Matt Macedo, will now take the reins. Both Falcon (USC) and Macedo (Cal) were All-American swimmers at Division I powers.

O'Brien is moving up to the Division I ranks at Santa Clara after ending his 14-year coaching stint at UCSD. He leaves as the school's most decorated coach, with 454 victories. Under O'Brien, the Tritons won four CCAA championships and went to the NCAA Division II College World Series twice, finishing second in 2010. Replacing O'Brien is Eric Newman, the pitching coach at University of Nebraska for the past four seasons. He was a fifth-round draft pick of the San Diego Padres in 1994 and played his way up to the AAA level.
