What You Do Mattersó How Annual Gifts Make the Difference

Alumni have unique reasons for supporting UC San Diego. For some, it is the memory of a professor who inspired them. For others, it is the idea that they can support groundbreaking research with the potential to advance health and save lives.

For Monique Rodriguez, ERC ’02, M.B.A. ’08 it was hearing from student and alumni scholarship recipients after she joined the UC San Diego Hispanic Scholarship Council (HSC). Inspired by the stories, Rodriguez made her first gift back to her alma mater and continues to give time and dollars, serving as chair of the council and consistently donating to the HSC and Rady School of Management, where she received her M.B.A.

“I give to say thanks to an institution that brought me where I am today,” says Rodriguez, who is director of government affairs for Qualcomm in Washington, D.C. “And also to set the example for the next generation and ensure that the University we went to continues to be that beacon of excellence.”

Like Rodriguez, many alumni give every year to support the University. These annual gifts are a vital source of support for UC San Diego and have a tremendous impact, providing funding for many areas of campus including:

• Undergraduate scholarships
• Graduate fellowships
• Faculty recruitment and retention
• Seed money for research
• Technology and equipment upgrades
• Cultural events
• Student travel grants
• Library acquisitions
• Guest lectures
• Innovation opportunities

With only nine percent of the University’s budget coming from the state, gifts from alumni are more critical than ever. It is only with consistent annual support that UC San Diego will be able to remain one of the nation’s top 10 public universities.

In recognition of this, UC San Diego has launched an Alumni Participation Campaign—What YOU Do Matters! The goal is to get 10,000 alumni to make a gift to the University by June 30, 2012. The size of the gift does not matter, as every gift, especially when pooled with the gifts of others, makes a difference. And when alumni make a gift, it has additional impact—alumni participation in giving is a key factor in national rankings, adding value to your degree.

“Someone was there to provide funding for me and it’s my responsibility to help the next generation,” adds Rodriguez. “Every little bit counts.”
