Last year, almost 2,000 people attended Alumni Weekend.
That’s what we call voting with your feet!
This year, UCSD Alumni have built on that experience to create a menu of events over four days from Thursday, May 31 through Sunday, June 3. “It’s not your typical reunion weekend,” says Suzi Sterner, senior director of programs at UCSD Alumni. “It’s four days filled with fun, unique experiences and old and new friends.”
Some of those unique experiences include a Career Boost Camp, on Saturday from 9 a.m.–12 p.m., a program with UCSD Extension at the Institute of the Americas. This new event is already proving a favorite with all graduate years, so early registration is advised. Another perennially popular event, Taste of UCSD, is scheduled for Thursday night. Five internationally recognized UCSD faculty members will discuss their groundbreaking research and, afterward, mingle over drinks and food provided by alumni-owned businesses.
On Friday June 1, from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m., UCSD Alumni will host the Family Night at Birch Aquarium, an event popular with all ages. Parents can schmooze, listen to live music and nosh on good food, while their children are transfixed by the underwater shows. And if you’re up for it, the Beach Party and Surfing Invitational has teams of eager surfers signed up to hit the waves at 7:30 a.m. and compete for the prestigious Paul Saltman Trophy. In keeping with that spirit of adventure, the Jacobs School Family Day features Albert Lin, Marshall ’04, M.S. ’05, Ph.D. ’08, whose National Geographic specials follow his search of the lost tomb of Genghis Khan.
The crowning jewel of the weekend is the Alumni Celebration on Saturday night, when UCSD Alumni honors its own during an event that benefits student scholarships. It’s truly a gala affair, and for those who want to loosen their ties, kick off their shoes and trip the light fantastic, the After-Party, starting at 9:30 p.m. has always proved a popular destination. Got any energy left, then wrap up the weekend with former classmates at the family-friendly Bear Brunch on Sunday.
