SPORTS SHORTS

Softball Crown - Close Call

The UC San Diego Softball team, led by Coach Patti Gercken, came tantalizingly close to snatching a second consecutive NCAA Division II Championship before finishing in second place in Louisville, Ky.

After beating Cal State Dominguez Hills, UCSD earned the Tritons a ticket to the Super Regional in Louisville. They stunned first-ranked Valdosta State in the first game of the double elimination tourney, but the team was then defeated by third place Kutztown State in an eight-inning second game—if the Tritons
lost again, they would go home. The team beat St. Joseph’s in 11 innings and second-ranked Central Oklahoma in nine innings, before whipping the Bronchos again, to win their ninth straight post-season elimination game and moving on to the championship final against Valdosta State. However, Valdosta went up early and held off UCSD, 4-1. The Tritons finished 45-23, their sixth consecutive year with 30 or more wins.

Record Eight UCSD Swimmers Participate in U.S. Olympic Trials

Eight swimmers represented UC San Diego at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. For each of the last three quadrennials, UCSD had sent only one swimmer to the trials.

At this year’s event, senior Alex Henley, Warren ’12 (200 backstroke/400 IM), junior Adam Rice, Warren ’13 (200 IM/100 butterfly), and sophomore Nick Korth, Revelle ’14 (100 and 200 breaststroke), qualified in two events each.

The other five who made the trials roster were senior Matt Herman, Muir ’12 (1500 freestyle); juniors Emily Adamczyk, Muir ’13 (200 breaststroke) and Jacob Lammott, Muir ’13 (200 breaststroke), and freshmen Eva Chen, Muir ’15 (200 IM) and Dane Stassi, Sixth ’14 (200 butterfly).

Triton Alumnae Compete in London

Congratulations to Christine Merrill, Sixth ’10 (right), UC San Diego’s first-ever Olympic competitor in track and field. An eight-time All-American at UCSD, Merrill ran under the colors of Sri Lanka (her mother’s native country) in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed eighth in her heat with a time of 57:15, a season best for Merrill.

Carrie Johnson, Revelle ’09, three-time Olympian, competed in two kayak events, the 500- and 200-meter races, reaching the semi-finals in both. Johnson says this is her last Olympic games. She plans to study veterinary medicine at UC Davis in the fall.
